Adding goals through the app helped mentees tell us what they want to work on, informing the ways we can support them without us assuming it. It's empowering youth voice.

Evidence for youth mentoring programs

Research your leadership can check.

Peer-reviewed findings are labeled as such. Manuscripts in preparation or in press are labeled too, because the difference matters.

Peer reviewedTargeted mentoring outperforms

A meta-analysis found that mentoring focused on specific goals and challenges produced effects two to three times larger than non-specific approaches.

Christensen et al., 2020, Journal of Youth and Adolescence
Peer reviewedBalance goals with the relationship

Among 2,165 youth in 30 programs, relationships that balanced goal focus with youth focus were closer and linked to fewer symptoms of distress.

Werntz, Poon, and Rhodes, 2023, Journal of Youth and Adolescence
Peer reviewedPredicting premature closure

Mentor and program characteristics measurable at intake predict which matches will end early, which is what MatchPRO weighs.

Kupersmidt et al., 2017, American Journal of Community Psychology
Peer reviewedShared interests matter

Pairs with shared interests reported stronger relationships across a large national sample.

Raposa et al., 2019, Journal of Community Psychology
Peer reviewedTrained peer mentors work

Cross-age peer mentoring effects in a meta-analysis were more than double those found in earlier meta-analyses of adult mentoring.

Step UpStep UpNational, United States

Step Up put its mentoring on one app: young women find mentors, set goals and message on their own schedule.

Step Up is a national mentorship nonprofit that guides girls and young women to their own definition of success. Step Up's Mentoring App, powered by MentorPRO, lets young women ages 18 to 29 find professional mentors, message them directly and track their goals. Mentors are working women ages 30 and up. Step Up runs its other programs, such as Power Talks and career coaching, alongside the app.

National Guard Youth ChalleNGeNational Guard Youth ChalleNGe21 academies nationwide

From six sites to 21, with 5,064 cadets registered and 3,800 of them using messaging.

ChalleNGe academies use MentorPRO to stay in contact with cadets through the post-residential year, when contact usually fades. The pilot began with six programs in December 2023 and reached 21 Youth ChalleNGe and Job ChalleNGe sites by the end of 2025. RAND's 2026 report on the program found that staff at all six original pilot sites favored staying in the pilot, and said it expects better graduate outcomes than under the traditional model, though it is too early to measure them. From January 2027 every academy must track contacts, placements and case management activity for each graduate for 24 months.

Frequently asked questions

Is MentorPRO a good fit for a small nonprofit starting structured mentoring?

Yes. Many partners start with one program and a small team. Plans start at $5,999 per year and include onboarding support, help desk, messaging, goal setting, check-ins, surveys, dashboards, and MentorPRO Academy courses, so a new program can launch without building its own tools or training.

Does MentorPRO work for multi-site nonprofit programs?

Yes. Six Big Brothers Big Sisters agencies run community-based, site-based, and mentor2.0 programs on MentorPRO, and National Guard Youth ChalleNGe grew from a single pilot to 21 academies in under two years. Staff can manage multiple programs and sites from one account.

How does MentorPRO help with grant and funder reporting?

Dashboards show engagement and outcomes in real time, and data can be exported for boards, grant reports, and funders. Check-ins, goals, and configurable surveys capture what changed for young people, not just how many meetings happened.

How does MentorPRO support programs with many volunteer mentors?

Volunteers get short, research-based MentorPRO Academy courses when they need them, not just one orientation. MentorAI gives mentors suggestions between meetings, and staff can see which matches are active and which need support.

Does MentorPRO work for both youth and young adult programs?

Yes. Partners include programs for teens, young women, cadets transitioning out of ChalleNGe academies, and young adults in workforce programs. Matching, goals, and training can be set up for each program's participants.

How does MentorPRO keep young people safe?

All messaging happens inside the platform, and program staff can see every conversation, so mentors and young people never need to share personal phone numbers or social media. MentorPRO has completed a SOC examination for data security.

What does MentorPRO cost for a nonprofit?

MentorPRO is licensed annually and priced by program size. Plans start at $5,999 per year, and most programs invest between $6,000 and $35,000 per year depending on the number of mentors and mentees and the level of support.
