MentorAI: Using Evidence and Technology to Strengthen Mentoring
Mentoring relationships are among the most effective strategies we have for supporting young people’s development. Yet, as decades of research have shown, the work of mentoring is also complex. Mentors must balance building trust and rapport with providing concrete support, all while juggling their own responsibilities and demands on their time. Despite their commitment, many mentors report feeling underprepared, uncertain about what to say in difficult moments, or stretched too thin to give their mentees the attention they deserve.
At MentorPRO, we began with this challenge in mind. What would it look like to design a tool that could ease the burden on mentors, while preserving the human connection at the heart of these relationships? This is the vision that guided the development of MentorAI, a research-based co-pilot designed to support mentors in the important work that they are doing, not replace them.
Grounded in Evidence
MentorAI is not just another tech innovation. It draws from more than 30 years of research on effective mentoring practices, as well as insights from the fields of psychology and mental health. Its functions are rooted in what we know supports relationship quality: preparing mentors to be responsive, consistent, and attuned to their mentees’ goals and challenges.
To that end, MentorAI provides:
- Mentee summaries that compile check-in scores, goals, and progress into clear, digestible snapshots daily.
- Real-time suggestions that mentors can adapt in their own authentic voice, particularly useful in sensitive or unfamiliar situations.
- Evidence-based strategies drawn from a robust body of mentoring science and resources specific to programs.
Lessons from Early Testing
In our initial pilot with university peer mentors, mentors reported that MentorAI helped them save time and reduced the mental effort required to prepare for meetings. More importantly, they noted that it improved their ability to respond thoughtfully and confidently to their mentees. As one mentor explained, “It allowed me to offer more complete support and guided me in being able to provide a better response to mentees. It also allowed me to save time in writing a response and rather allowed me to modify the message to cater more specifically to the mentee’s needs.”
Although early findings are encouraging, they also highlight the importance of training and oversight. Every mentor completes a brief training on how to use MentorAI ethically and effectively, with a focus on authenticity, transparency, and program safety protocols. Mentors are reminded that AI should never invent personal stories or override program guidelines — rather, it should serve as a scaffold for stronger, more consistent support.
Looking Forward
The development of MentorAI was made possible through funding from the National Science Foundation (SBIR Phase I award) and the Tools Competition. These investments reflect growing recognition of the role that thoughtfully designed technology can play in scaling and strengthening mentoring.
Still, MentorAI is only a tool. The heart of mentoring will always remain in the genuine human connection between mentors and mentees. What tools like MentorAI can do is help ensure that those relationships are supported by the best available evidence and that mentors are better equipped to provide consistent, high-quality guidance.
As we continue to test and refine MentorAI, we are guided by a central question: How can technology be harnessed to uphold the principles of effective mentoring, rather than distract from them?
We believe MentorAI represents one step toward that future — where evidence and innovation come together in service of the young people who benefit most from strong, enduring mentoring relationships.
